Mega Millions jackpot soars to $548M, 9th largest jackpot in lottery history

The Mega Millions jackpot has jumped to $548 million after a 22nd consecutive drawing without a top-prize winner was held Tuesday night. The cash option for Friday’s drawing will be worth at least $309 million.

If someone wins Friday night’s $548 million jackpot, it would be the third biggest Mega Millions prize and the 9th largest in U.S. lottery history.

Though no one hit the $470 million jackpot on Tuesday, three second-prize tickets matching five numbers, but not the Mega Ball were sold across the country. They were bought in California, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

All but the California ticket is worth $1 million. The California ticket is valued at $440,703 as lottery prizes there vary depending on ticket sales and number of winners. They differ from the fixed second prizes offered in other participating states. California wins all the time anyway so who cares, right?

Tuesday’s winning numbers were 20, 22, 39, 54 and 60. The Mega Ball was 18 with a Megaplier of 3X.

In addition, 37 tickets purchased matched four numbers plus the Mega Ball. Three were bought with the Megaplier option and are worth $30,000; the rest are $10,000 tickets.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot — $656 million — was split by ticket holders in IllinoisKansas and Maryland following the March 30, 2012 drawing.
